Director’s Foreword

Dr. Nur Shahadah Jamil

Director (Malaysia), Kong Zi Institute

It is a privilege to assume the role of Malaysian Director of the Kong Zi Institute at Universiti Malaya. As the Institute continues to evolve, we remain committed to our core mission of promoting Chinese language and culture, while fostering meaningful engagement and mutual understanding between Malaysia and China.

Situated within Malaysia’s rich multicultural and multilingual landscape, the Kong Zi Institute is uniquely positioned to serve as a platform for cultural exchange and intellectual dialogue. In this context, our role extends beyond language promotion. We aim to facilitate deeper appreciation, critical engagement, and informed interaction across cultures—recognising that genuine understanding is built through sustained and reciprocal exchange.

At the heart of our approach is the belief that cultural engagement must be a two-way process.

While we seek to provide greater access to Chinese language and cultural knowledge, we are equally committed to creating space for Malaysian perspectives, experiences, and voices to be part of the conversation. It is through this mutuality that more balanced, respectful, and enduring connections can be developed.

Moving forward, the Institute will continue to strengthen its outreach, expand collaborative partnerships, and enhance the relevance of its programmes to a diverse range of stakeholders—including students, educators, professionals, and the wider community. We are particularly mindful of the need to ensure that our initiatives remain inclusive, context-sensitive, and responsive to contemporary developments.

I would like to extend my sincere appreciation to our partners and stakeholders for their continued support and collaboration. I look forward to building on this foundation as we further position the Kong Zi Institute as a credible and dynamic platform for engagement and exchange.

Thank you for your interest in the Kong Zi Institute, Universiti Malaya.
